About our Japanese Axes
All our axes are made by Mizuno Seisakusho, led by Mr. Seisuke Mizuno. Mr Mizuno is a holder of the prestigious title “Master of Traditional Craft”, certified by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan (MEIT), to which only a small number of people are selected. Within the metal work category, Mr. Mizuno is the only person certified as a creator of Axes. Mizuno’s work is widely recognised in Japan. Their axes are hard to obtain and are rarely seen outside of Japan.
Mizuno Seisakusho is located in “Tsubame” in northern Japan; a region world renowned for quality steel work. Mizuno axes are all made of forged steel, hand crafted and sharpened by traditional techniques. All parts including the steel and wood are carefully sourced in Japan. Wood for the handle is sourced from the northern Kanto region where the hardest and densest oak woods are found in Japan.
All Japanese axes have seven slots on the head, three on one side, four on the other. They are not just a design element but each slot represents an ancient Japanese god. It is a superstitious belief that these gods would protect axe users from accidents. Forestry work can be dangerous so it is a good reminder to be careful. One of the gods is the goddess of the Sun, known as “Amaterasu Ohmikami”. “Amaterasu Ohmikami” is one of the most significant gods of Japanese Shintoism mythology as she represents the mythical ancestress of the Japanese imperial family.
Our signature product, the beautifully designed broad axe with burnt oak wood handle, not only works well but compliments any high-end designer fireplace as an accessory for those who use firewood.
The Craft Axe is our latest addition from Mizuno. This compact, superbly mobile product has been particularly popular since its release in 2020. With a sudden rise in the popularity of camping, this item has been a handy must-have item for campers, bush craft enthusiasts and design lovers.
