This is 100% camellia seed oil. At Shokunin Store we offer edible grade oil because we want to ensure there is no chemical or thinning agent added.  For 1,200 years, the Japanese have been using camellia seed oil for many things. While they may not burn the oil to light the dark timber houses at night any longer, they still use it for food, cosmetics and metal tools.

Camellia seed oil is rich in oleic acid (80%) which is a mono-unsaturated omega-9 fatty acid that is effective in reducing bad cholesterol and blood pressure.  It is considered one of the healthier sources of fat in the diet.  In the west, it is generally thought that olive oil contains the most acid of this type, however, it has been proven that it is in fact camellia seed oil that carries more oleic acid than any other oils available.

The type of fat in camellia seed is called triglycerides.  Triglycerides are the main constituents of body fat in humans.  In other words, camellia seed oil has fats closest to human skin.  This makes the oil perfect to be used for cosmetics and food.  This oil has particularly been successful as a hair care product in Japan as it provides beautiful glow on their dark silky hair and serves as a natural UV protection.  Apply a little on your hair before blow drying to protect from heat and damages such as breakage, frizz and dryness.

In Japan, camellia seed oil is also extremely popular as tool oil for scissors, secateurs, shears, loppers and knives.  The oil forms a protective barrier on blades making them corrosion resistant.  And as a result, the blades will stay sharper for longer.  For scissors, the oil also works as lubricant allowing the two blades to move smoothly.  But why not other oils but use camellia seed oil?  Because it is clear, odourless and not sticky.  It stays that way after coating tools and even leaving them for a long time as other oils may oxidise and change smells and colours.

There are a few camellia seed tool oils available in the market but most have only a drop of it in them.  Some don’t clarify what other ingredients are in them.  We have the best Japanese garden and kitchen tools in the world so you should be offered the best way to maintain them too.  This is important when so many of us believe in and practice organic planting and diet, what you put on your blades should be safe too.  This edible grade of oil is often used for fine machineries for both quality and safety.

where does the oil come from?

The oil comes from Kagoshima on Japan’s Kyushu Island.  The city is best known for Mt. Sakurajima, one of the most active volcanos in the country. For many people there, the oil was  just an every day item, nothing special.  It was something you made yourself.  In 1985, Kagoshima suffered particularly heavy ash-fall which killed a lot of crops.  And guess what flowers they saw blossomed later that year as if nothing happened – camellia.  Knowing the volcano is always going to do this, the locals planted many more camellia trees to make more solid industry out of it.

This camellia seed oil is in fact so versatile, everyone should have a bottle at home.  Not only used on your kitchen and garden tools, you can use it on your skin and hair.  If you have wooden chopping boards or utensils, this oil is perfect to use.

Use of Camellia seed oil declined for a period of time in Japan as a result of people buying cheaper alternative imports, however, in recent years it gained popularity again as people became more aware and appreciative of this incredibly nourishing oil that is natural and safer.
