Description
This gorgeous iris matcha tea bowl is an authentic Japanese item that is used for tea ceremonies. Hand-moulded and painted, it makes an exquisite collectable art piece in any space. Colourful iris flowers cover the entire surface of this classy luxurious bowl with abundant streaks of gold painted throughout. Iris motifs symbolise early summer – May in Japan – that is when you would see these bowls used at tea ceremonies.
Iris in Japanese is “Ayame” or 菖蒲, pronounced as “Show-boo”. It is a homophone for a “fight’, “match” or “contest” 勝負 and 尚武; respecting strength cultivated through martial arts and such philosophy. Irises were also linked to warding off bad luck in ancient Japan. These are the reasons why iris is still used in celebrating the health and happiness for boys on the 5th of May, “Day of Boys and Children” in Japan and therefore these bowls are often purchased and used around this time of the year.
Use this bowl before an important contest or give as a gift to someone who has an upcoming challenge. Or simply treat yourself to a special tea time of your own or start your unique art collection like a true Japanese tea master.
