Description
Shokunin Store original Japanese ceramic reusable cup “Red Earth” is made by award winning Kyoto-based ceramic artist Shigeo Takemura of Daiichi Kiln. This is an art piece you can hold in your hands every day, offered at an affordable price. In your car on your way to work or strolling to your favourite coffee shop, this beautiful reusable cup will brighten your day wherever you take it. I am a firm believer that tea and coffee taste better in ceramics. Our Red Earth reusable ceramic cup is not only environmentally friendly, I just love the way my coffee tastes in this cup. And being a natural ceramic product, you know it’s not only gently on the environment but also gentle on your body – microplastics released from single use coffee cups can’t be good for you!
We should all own a reusable cup but there aren’t many options out there for ceramic cups. For me, plastic was out of the question. The ceramic cups I did find were too thick and clunky. I like my hot drinks reasonably hot, but heavy ceramic cups tend to suck the heat out of your drink. Plus, the thick rims on these cups are unpleasant to drink out of when you sip from the cup without the lid. So I designed this reusable cup and had it specially made.
art piece by a renowned ceramic artist for daily use
I wanted to offer something unique in design. When I saw Takemura san’s ceramic collection with these two contrasting colours, sky blue and earthy matte orange, I fell in love. Because it was so different and because it was so familiar. Because It reminded me of the red earth and the blue skies of Australia. Years ago I travelled from Adelaide to Darwin aboard the Australian sleeper train, The Ghan. As I gazed for hours from the window of the train, mesmerized by the landscape, these are the colours that captivated me.
This reusable ceramic cup is an exclusive item available only from Shokunin Store. Creating this reusable cup was not without challenge for Takemura san, who unlike many Kyoto ceramicists, makes his cups entirely by hand without using a mould. After much trial and error, he successfully created a cup that standard size silicone lids will fit so they work as a reusable keep cup.
the Colours of the outback
One of the special features of this Japanese ceramic reusable cup is its amazing colours. The natural glaze is handmade, a magical creation of the artist using sunflowers. The artist Shigeo Takemura is a truly well-respected figure in the world of ceramics and traditional crafts. Having won numerous awards in Japan, he also serves as a judge for ceramic competitions. He has been accepted as a member of the prestigious Japan Kogei (Crafts) Association and the Kyoto Arts and Crafts Artists Association. His works displayed in museums are worth thousands of dollars. I love how he also enjoys creating everyday items like this cup, making his beautiful work accessible.
