Although perhaps more famous now for their topiary shears and secateurs these days, it was actually these tailor’s shears that initially put Yoshioka Hamono on the map in 1946, establishing themselves as masters of blades. Yoshioka Hamono is located in Ono, a region renowned for its steel forges and expertise in metal work. With a history dating back 1,200 years, the blacksmiths of Ono rival those of the northern Japanese city of Sanjo (Tsubame) in Niigata. Since 1946, Yoshioka Hamono have been producing a wide range of garden shears and tailors’ scissors. Their legendary curved topiary shears and Black Masamune Secateurs in particular have also earned them many enthusiastic fans all around the world.

history of Japanese tailor’s shears

These tailor’s shears are called “rasha” scissors in Japan.  The word “rasha” comes from “raxa”, derived from the old Portuguese word for “thick, coarse cloth”. Western-style scissors are believed to have been introduced to Japan in the mid 19th Century.  The Japanese adjusted the western scissors to suit their use, making them more compact, lighter and sharper.
