At the Tokyo International Gift Show in February 2025 — Japan’s largest trade exhibition featuring over 2,700 exhibitors—Yoshioka Hamono’s “Kuroco Pointed Tip Pruning Scissors” received the highly esteemed LIFE✖️Design Award for Best Takumi (Master Artisan) Craft. This award is given to a select few brands that represent the highest levels of traditional craftsmanship and innovation in design.
This honour is far more than a trophy. It acknowledges a centuries-old Japanese forging technique that is now critically endangered—one that is rooted in samurai sword-making and carried forward by only a handful of blacksmiths.

The Kuroco Pointed Tip Scissors stand apart in a market saturated by mass-produced tools. Forged using a traditional Japanese technique that combines high-carbon steel and softer iron (known as hagane), these scissors feature a single-edged construction, where one side of the blade is sharpened. It is much like a razor you use for shaving beared or your sashimi knife. This design is extremely sharp and offers precision.

In some regions, the number of scissor makers has dropped to one-thirteenth of what it was 50 years ago, due to an ageing artisan workforce and a demanding 8–10 year apprenticeship to master the craft.
