Our Premium Japanese Wild Cherry Bark Tea and Coffee Canister is crafted from the bark of wild mountain cherry trees, native to the northern Japanese region of Akita. Painstakingly crafted, wild cherry bark products symbolise exquisiteness and quality in Japan, and are treasured by those who have them. Using a traditional technique that originated in Akita more than two centuries ago known as “kabazaiku”, our artisan maker Yatsuyanagi has been creating a wide range of premium wild cherry bark products since 1876.

Conventional cherry bark canisters are often polished to a glossy finish, but we love how this canister has been left unpolished, highlighting the natural texture of the cherry bark. Typifying the Japanese wabi-sabi aesthetic, the Premium Japanese Wild Cherry Bark Tea and Coffee Canister manages be both simple and natural, yet elegant at the same time. Achieving such a fine balance of simplicity and beauty requires quality materials and expert skills. Only flawless bark can be left unpolished, so the bark has to be carefully chosen and meticulously examined to ensure that it is perfect. The quality wild cherry bark is then dried for three years before it is made into beautiful tea and coffee canisters.

An important feature in the making of kabazaiku cherry bark products is that the cherry bark is harvested in a way that does not harm the tree. Drawing on centuries of skill and knowledge, only the outer paper thin layer of bark is carefully harvested, allowing the outer bark to regenerate. This is a truly sustainable product – in a time when sustainability is more important to us than ever. What’s more, the company Yatsuyanagi is actively involved in cherry tree planting and the preservation of the natural environment, ensuring that these products can continue to be made for centuries to come.
