Just soak in water for 20 min before use.  This sharpener is compact and thin, designed for scissors so you can sharpen your scissors without taking the blades apart.  Take care not to run the sharpener on the back of the blades, only the front.  The secret of Japanese scissors is in the back.  They are concave.  If you would like to professionally maintain them after years of use, please let us know and we can send them back to our makers.  After all, all our gardening and floral scissors at Shokuinin Store should last for decades, if not generations.  We also recommend applying a little camellia seed oil to prevent from rust.
